Hardware Review: Ferrari GT 458 Wheel
The Ferrari GT 458 wheel is at the very top echelon of driving wheels for the console market today.
Made by Thrustmaster and in the price bracket of over £300 on the official Ferrari website, let me just say this was a dream come true to finally get my hands on a top end driving wheel to run it through its paces.
Having played all my years of driving games with a standard controller, and with some success I may add, I have to say this was a experience to savor , from the unpacking of the full cockpit unit and the superb authenticity of the wheel itself, to the sheer weight, size and overall feel of quality you know your in for a treat with your console driving experience.
The unit itself, is a full standing sturdy metal column with a large foot base and top quality metal pedals, one brake, and one accelerator, no clutch, but we do have the wheel based paddle gear levers on either side, again adding to the quality of the unit. Added to this are rubberized grips at the standard positions on the wheel which again provide a great feel of authenticity.
The unit itself, is wired, connected by USB and games such as, the old Grid, along with the latest Forza Horizon, with a bit of Dirt thrown in for good measure, absolute no additional set up was required on any, except little tweaks here and there to get your personal preferences just as you like them, just plug in, get yourself comfy, and be prepared for a superb driving experience all in the comfort of your front room.
The central column of the cockpit is of a strong metal structure, fully adjustable in both height and length, and once locked into place provides strength and support even the most enthusiastic driver may throw at it, and its just that what sets this apart from any other “wheel” experience you may have tried, even down to the front view looking like a real car, which some enthusiast’s may have wished to be dawned in the good old fashioned Ferrari Red but it matters not, because everything about this wheel screams quality.
The handling and gameplay side of things are again just right, with full central spring loaded system within the wheel, along with the superb rumble feature to give you that feel of what it maybe like if you stray to far off the beaten path, just an overall great driving experience, no matter which game you try.
The overall feel and look of this wheel/cockpit unit was a sheer pleasure to try and whether your an experienced console driver, or a mere Sunday driver, you will just love the feel and look of the Ferrari GT 458 wheel.
OKit’s at the very top of anyone’s gaming budget price wise, but if your after that “real” feel of racing, then this is a “must” have piece of gaming hardware….a dream to drive…..and play.

This is a 360 specific wheel, but I think they do the PS3 version.and yes has force feedback.
Does it work on both consoles? I have a set up for xbox but I’m wanting one for the ps3 to play Gran Turismo 5. Also does it have force feedback?
